UAA/UMED Sprint Results

Around 60 orienteers sprinted through the UAA and APU campuses this past Wednesday.  Sunny skies and not too many mosquitoes made for pleasant conditions as participants navigated over pavement and around buildings searching for the controls. Many racers hung around afterwards to compare routes and soak up the evening sun. A moose passed right by the registration table but ultimately decided not to enter. (Editor’s note: It’s well known that moose prefer traditional meets to urban sprints, explaining its reluctance to rent a hoof stick.)

From the remote start, Long Course racers tackled both campuses before punching in at the finish. New to Alaska and making his AOC race debut, Sam Griffin collected the 23 controls fastest to claim the men’s Long title. On the women’s side Tamara Kornfield beat out a competitive field to capture the women’s Long win.

On the Short Course an enticing control from the White Course tripped up a few competitors. Ultimately, Corin Harmon sped through to take the men’s Short title, Brittany Hippe reigned supreme in the women’s Short, and Breena and Sean combined forces to take the team win.

White Course participants raced between 5 outdoor sculptures across the east UAA campus. Team Long beat out Peter and Henry for the team title.

Special thanks to Dorn Van Dommelen for map edits and answering many questions, Abby Stemper for running the remote start, Todd Shearer and Steve McKeever for getting the extra start and clear programed and Mark Findlay for helping new participants get oriented.
