All of the larger camping locations at lower elevation were taken, so our choices for a group spot were limited. The good news is there was a nice area up high where we parked our trailer. It’s a large gravel overlook, and there’s no guarantee that people won’t join us today or tomorrow, but it has lots of room for parking, great views, no bugs, and isn’t much cooler or windier than down lower. However, the surrounding vegetation, while there is plenty of dry, open, non-sloping places to pitch a tent, might not be to your liking if you don’t sleep well on tussocks. The pull-out itself is flat-ish and gravel, so you can pitch tents there if you prefer. There’s currently plenty of room for gathering around a campfire or grill. In addition, there are about a dozen smaller pull-outs within a mile, so people can spread out if they want.
The alpine overlook is at the top of the bench after two switch backs about 23.5 miles east on the Willow-Fishhook Road. Details will be at the Willow venue.
There were also smaller sites down by the river which might appeal to some campers, as well as room for tents at the venue itself.
We can make any decisions about cookout location, etc., on Saturday at the meet.
With flexibility and a good Alaskan “make-do” attitude, it should be lots of fun!
