Arctic-O-Poly!

Remember that there is no meet this week, but next week….

Join the club this coming Wednesday, September 16th, for an end-of-the-season Score-O, followed directly by our annual meeting, meet director recognition, and election of board members –and eating pizza!

This meet we are playing Arctic-O-Poly to celebrate all of this year’s events (and even one from 2025!). Below, you’ll find the completely unorthodox punch card (manual punches this week) that will be printed (in B&W, I’m afraid) and distributed at the start.

Each Score-O control 10-81 is worth 10 x its first digit. (43, for example is worth 40 points.) But for this game, you get an additional 10 points for any meet you did as a participant. If you were the assistant meet director for an event, you get an additional 20 points and, if you were the meet director, you get 40 additional points and bragging rights. Meet directors: It’s a matter of pride that you punch your own meet. Don’t let us down!

In addition, there are four other controls, numbers 1-4. (You only need to punch any one of the squares.) I’m not telling you how much they are worth, but these tips I will share:

• Meet Box #1: Rewards for people, other than directors and assistant directors, who were involved in a meet.
• ePunch #2: Have you ever used LiveLox or SPORTident this year?
• BINGO #3: Control #3 might have been BS, but this time it holds hidden rewards!
• Purple Pen/Open Orienteering Mapper #4: Are you a mapping geek?

Like any Score-O, there is a mass start at 6. You’ll have 60 minutes to collect controls. You’ll need to come to the annual meeting afterwards for final scoring and pizza.

Final note: In our family there’s a joke about games: If you were the oldest child in your family, you get to dictate what game we are playing – bossy as you are. If you are the baby of the family you always get to win, of course. If you are the middle child, you get to clean up the game after we are done. I was the baby. I can’t win this event because I’m the meet director, but don’t complain about the game, even if you are somehow disadvantaged by the fairly arbitrary scoring system. If you do complain, I’ll cry and make a scene and, if my sister were still alive, she would tell you that I was a master at playing the baby card and winning. You’ll regret complaining and live with the consequences for years! I’ll always be the favorite and you’ll be the black sheep.
