Location: Starts from 2pm-4pm on the UMED map, just north of the parking lot of UAA’s Arts Building, beyond the snow piles (see below for details).
This event is free, but you must complete a season waiver for 2022.
There will be three courses: A Bike-O, a Ski-O, and a shorter Winter-O (you will be free to bike, ski, run or kicksled on that course). Cory Smith is the route setter using a map that shows all of the winter single-track trails around APU, UAA, Goose Lake, and the Davenport Fields.
There will be a few different options on the longer courses. One course is geared slightly more towards bikers, and the other towards skiers. But both are on multi-use trails and about 5-6 kilometers long. You can ski, bike, run, or walk either course or you can do a winter orienteering duathlon and do both! In addition, you may team up with another orienteer on the duathlon. There will be space to stash skis and bikes, but we still recommend bringing a lock to secure your gear.
On the short course, we encourage individuals, teams, and families to enjoy the course as they please but want to encourage kicksleds. Bring your kicksled decorated. A Best Decorated Kicksled will be chosen after a short kicksled parade at 3 p.m.
Meet Director: Dorn Van Dommelen
How to Get to the Start
Park in the UAA Arts Parking Lot, just northeast of the Fine Arts Building. The start/finish area is about 100 yards northeast of the parking lot, but the lot is surrounded by very large snow banks so you won’t see it. There are two routes from the parking lot to the start, highlighted in purple on the map below. Both will be flagged.
Recommended Route: park at the south end of the lot, and take the trail to the east. This trail is a flat 5 minute walk to the start.- If you are comfortable climbing the snow banks, head to the north end of the parking lot and follow the flagging up and over to the trail on the other side. Depending on the snow/ice conditions, this route could be difficult.
