The Mountain-O is happening this Saturday, July 13.
NOTE: Due to the weather forecast for rain and extremely high winds at upper elevations tomorrow the Mountain-O will NOT be held tomorrow, Saturday. Instead it’ll be the next day, this Sunday, July 14. Same times: Registration and starts between 10 am and noon, you must finish by 5 pm.
Registration and the start / finish will be at the lower (east) parking lot at the Glenn Alps trailhead. Its $5 to park if you do not have a CPS parking pass.
Starts will be from 10 am to noon, and you must finish by 5 pm. Two courses will be set: a Long course with 14 controls just short of 16 km (straight line distance) in length, and a Short course with 8 controls that’s just short of 10 km. Both courses have a fair bit of upping and downing – after all it is a Mountain-O!
No e-punching for this meet, we’ll use old-fashioned controls and paper control cards and, so leave those finger sticks at home.
Be prepared for what might be a wet, chilly day. Bring plenty of warm clothes, snacks and water. And of course, be prepared for the hazards of backcountry, off trail travel: bear and / or moose encounters are possible, mosquitos are probable and steep terrain, stream and snow field crossings, and mud bogs are highly likely. As is rain.
But the views will be fantastic and the challenges rewarding. So don’t be deterred by the forecast. Come on out and enjoy a few hours in the mountains.
