The Crevasse Moraine weekend orienteering will happen on Saturday, September 13. There will be White, Yellow, Orange and Red courses; starts from 10AM to 2PM; everyone should plan to be finished by 5 PM.

Park at the Matanuska Lakes Recreation area (state parks sticker or parking fee); the start is a half mile walk from the trailhead that’s near campsites 1 to 4 (ahead to the right when you drive in). Coming from Anchorage, the Rec Area is a left turn off the Glenn Highway at mile 36.4, just after the Fox Run RV park, and just before the turn to Kepler Park. It’s marked by a brown sign on the right about 100 yds before it, and a small low sign on the left at the entrance driveway.

Because the brush is so thick at this time of year, the route choices don’t require long off-trail navigating (that would just be mean), but there are definitely opportunities for choosing which combinations of trails, fields and off-trail shortcuts will be fastest.

The courses are on the long side of our typical lengths, but within course guidelines, except for the white course, which is about 3 miles long (instead of 1.5 to 2 miles).

$8 adults, kids under 18 free, first time orienteering free
