A virtual-O is an informal self-serve training activity we are making available for free during the COVID19 shutdown.
- Start and Finish at Service High School (east parking lot)
- Courses will be left up all week, just pick a day/time and get outside to enjoy some orienteering.
- Let someone know where you are going and expected return time.
- Control points in the field will be marked by triangular flags on 3′ wire plus survey tape.
- Bring a pen to mark off controls you visit on the map and to record your start and finish time.
- Maintain social distancing when encountering other people on the course.
Notes from the Meet Director:
We’re all pretty familiar with the deadfall and swampiness in the Service area. Unfortunately, you have to get through some of it in order to get out to the good terrain. Because I didn’t have loads of time to scout out features farther out, I opted to focus more on the ski trail area, and even stumbled upon a geocache near one control. I did try to avoid the worst of the ugliness with regards to deadfall and devils club, and found it possible to navigate across the swamp without getting soaked.
The short course is probably yellow in difficulty. The medium and long courses are mostly orange to maybe green. All controls are marked with white and orange pin flags and yellow surveyor’s flagging tape.
My thanks to Mary Hudson Kelley, who was eager to learn how to set courses after learning how to orienteer with me this summer.
