On a beautiful, windy evening, about 50 orienteers came out to help close the regular season with a weird and wacky monopoly-themed Score-O. There were 1300 points to be earned before various bonuses, all of which helped the club to celebrate a great season of 22 meets and other events and doings.
Despite the meet director’s effort to send our top orienteers far afield to collect “their” controls, Scott Patterson still won the event with a score of 930 with Ian Moore just 20 points behind (if he had only punched the mapping control!), Also in Red, Julia Ditto scored 540 points and won for the women. At the Green level, it was a family affair with Jamie Shearer leading the women at 300 points. Rowan gave notice, again, that he has designs on conquering club events with a score of 730 for the men. The Orange orienteers were led by Frank Witmer with a score of 530 points. Jo Singleton won amongst the women with a score of 460 and Eli & Sam were the team leaders at 430 points. Yellow and White were combined for this event. Juli Suver took it for the women with a score of 110. Team Van Dommelen scored 280 points to win their category.
Thanks to Lexi Hill for grabbing the pizza and drinks for the after party. Mike Robinson and Julia Ditto are pulling the controls, which, after the wind, will require unwrapping the controls’ twisted strings from branches and devil’s club. Annual meeting planning was a group affair – President Steve McKeever, Jen Jolliff, and Anne Billman were the leading contributors.
Thanks to the club for putting up with this event and not complaining too bitterly about it. It brought me great pleasure to come up with the concept, make the game board, and plan it. Of course I would have won it if I’d had a chance to play. The baby of the family always does get to win at Monopoly.
What’s Next?
While the season officially ended last night, orienteering never really ends. Brittany is planning her annual Halloween-O for October 17th. Look for details soon. Dorn and Rowan are hoping to put on the club’s first indoor orienteering meet in November at some point and Control #3 is BS will be held later this year, too.
