A beautiful but buggy evening greeted the over 90 people who particpated in the first  event of the Alaska Orienteering Festival on Wednesday night.  Over two dozen of the participants are from outside Alaska and if you look at the results you can see the club affiliation for many of them (see list of club codes).  We are so excited to have guests from out of state that love to talk about orienteering and are excited to see our venues!

While Earthquake Park is small in size, the intricate terrain and vegetation is difficult to travel across and physically demanding. Yury Tambasov placed first on the long course, with locals Allan Spangler and Scott Patterson taking 2nd and 3rd.  Yury’s win is especially impressive given the local competition’s familiarity with the venue. Jen Jolliff placed first on the long course with Jamie Shearer and Brittany Hippe taking 2nd and 3rd.  Brian Durrell and Sofia Aguilar on the short course placed first in the men’s and women’s class.

An equipment snafu caused drama for the meet directors and chaotic opening of the registration desk.  Many thanks to the club members that spontaneously stepped in to help the meet directors get up and running as quickly as possible.  Thank you to meet directors Alex Knapp and Barret Malouf for setting fun and challenging courses.  Thanks also to Dwight Iverson who stayed late to help pull controls and Ian Moore who compiled the spreadsheet that allows you to compare performance on legs across loops.
