Over 57 people, both Alaskans and visitors convened for a cloudy but pleasant day in Hatcher Pass. To reach the start of the course, participants had to walk over a mile up a rough 4-wheeler track, down to a river, and cross using a paddleboard ferry. Fortunately, all participants completed the arduous journey and were able to start the race without getting wet from the chest-deep stream crossing.

On the 12.6km Long course, Delaware Valley Orienteering Association’s Yury Tambasov won in 2:04:02 while locals Scott Patterson and Allan Spangler took second and third. Competitors got to enjoy controls placed by a dizzying variety of boulders, cross talus fields, and slide down plentiful snowfields (to the surprise of some of the out-of-staters).

The 8.4km Medium course was won by local Julia Ditto in 1:53:11 whilst Quantico Orienteering Club’s Alex Azarov won for men and Willow Creek course setter Bill Spencer took third.

The 4.9km Short course may have been less long, but featured some of the hardest terrain including a 200-meter but 20+ contour climb between controls 2 and 3. Numerous competitors chose to skip some legs to save lengthy ascents and descents, but those who finished came away happy. DVOA’s Sergei Fedorov finished first in 1:23:43, whilst Arctic’s Mark Rosier finished second and Anne Billman won for women and reached third place overall in 2:09:45.

Despite sometimes difficult terrain, competitors came away happy with the venue.
