Earthquake Park
The drizzle let up just long enough for about 60 orienteers to enjoy a dash through the woods of Earthquake Park without getting too wet, though the mud certainly made it interesting! As the first race in the 2024 Arctic Orienteering Sprint Series, this race was designed to be a little different from most previous Earthquake Park meets. Less focus on careful navigation, more focus on quick route decisions. Competitors ran through, or close to, the start/finish area multiple times, which enabled opportunities for spectating and cheering.
On the very popular “long” course (2.8 kilometers, 20 controls), it was one of our closest finishes in years, as Allan Spangler edged out Springer Moore by a mere two seconds. The women’s race was also close, with Jen Jolliff taking the win by about a minute over Julia Ditto. On the short course (1.6 kilometers, 12 controls), siblings Hatcher and Talia Smith each posted the top time for men and women, respectively.
