Ship Pass Mountain-O Results

24 Hearty souls braved rain showers and foggy conditions to cop some of the more interesting orienteering that Alaska has to offer. Stunning vistas, alpine cirques, steep slopes, slippery snow fields, drifting clouds, a mystery boulder control, cold creek crossings, marsh and wet brush all added to the challenge.

Ian and Springer battled for supremacy on the men’s long course (15.5 km, 1280 meters of elevation gain, 15 controls), Allan, David and Kai, and Cole and Nick all solved the mystery and returned with full punch cards. Both Jen and Julia on the women’s long course and many of the men got tripped up on the mystery boulder control near Ship Pass. Dorn took a practice glissade on the back side of peak 2 and had to go get his elbow stitched after the finish.

On the Shortened version (9.3 km, 800 meters of elevation gain, 8 controls) Franklin cruised to an easy victory over Peter and the team of Alex and Abby. On the women’s short course Marcela visiting from the Czech Republic showed that she could handle whatever craziness Alaska backcountry had to offer and won, made it look easy.
