The Sprint Series pursuit is set. Come join the club for the final sprint event of the year at Bartlett on Wednesday Sept 6th. The start will be just east of the football field. Park by the swimming pool. There will be a Long (3.2 km, 18 controls) and a Short (2.2 km, 10 controls). They are short and fast and require quick route decision making. Both courses include a mix of “urban” and forest running.
Here’s how the championship will work:
Open event: Anyone can run in the Long or Short course during the “Open” time period. The meet director will try to have it all ready to go as early as 4:30 pm, but reserves the right to start a bit later than that. Both courses are fairly short so that it will be easy for orienteers to get back to the start by 6 pm when the pursuit championship will begin. Open starts will end at 5:45 pm.
Pursuit: At 6 pm, sharp, Scott Patterson, our current leader will start the course. The top 18 competitors who qualified for the pursuit will begin, in pursuit of Scott and each other, after him, based on their best two sprint times (see chart and explanation below).
Tailgate: Everyone else is invited for an informal cookout at the Start/Finish area to watch the start and then the event as it unfolds. The pursuit course will come near the Start/Finish area several times so we’ll all be able to watch the orienteers and cheer them on. Hot dogs will be provided by the club. Bring a snack to share and beverages.

How were the times calculated?
For each event a “best possible” time was calculated based on the fastest time for each leg of the course (as run by a single – non-team – finisher). Each orienteer’s time was based, in seconds, on how far behind the best possible time they finished. The times for each event were then normalized against the average best possible time for all five sprints. The average number of seconds of each orienteer’s two best times were used to calculate how long they begin after the leader. A full spreadsheet is available for inspection.
