This week’s sprint race or a pleasant walk on the trails is at Ruth Arcand, 3766 Abbott Road. Starts are from 5-7 pm, with all participants returning before 9:00 pm.
There is an event scheduled at the pavilion, so we will be using the second or larger parking lot 100 meters farther into the park (down the driveway).
The sport of orienteering originated in Scandinavia and the local Sons of Norway lodge will have a table and be providing tasty snacks at this week’s meet.
I’m not expecting a lot of horse riding activity during our race, but if you do come across a horse on a trail common practice is to move to the side of the trail and yield to the horse. Also, it is posted not to pet or feed any of the animals.
- Short course is 1.7 km with 13 controls in sight of the trails
- Medium course is 2.2 km with 19 controls with a mix of on and off the trail.
- Long course is 3.0 km with 20 controls with a mix of on and off trail. The course has 20 controls mapped in “dog bone” pairs (1A and 1B, 2A and 2B, etc.). You must visit all control pairs in numerical order but may choose within each pair whether to visit A or B first. The most obvious order may not always be your best choice, as it may make your next route choice more challenging. There is an element of strategy involved to select the most efficient order to visit each pair of controls. Take a look at this sample course to get a feel for how it works. Going to 1A first would add some length and time.
