Eager to get out after all this rain? Come on out this Saturday, 8/14 between 11am – 3 pm and enjoy orienteering at the Settler’s Bay Coastal Park, a venue in the Mat-Su debuted by the club last fall! This lovely new park features stunning views across Knik Arm and the Palmer Hay Flats, with wooded areas, wetlands, and two anadromous streams.
This meet was rescheduled to an in-person meet to coincide with Settler’s Bay Coastal Park Exploration Day sponsored by the Great Land Trust and Mat-Su Trails and Parks Foundation. Other Exploration Day activities include:
- Local archeologists will have a table providing information about the cultural history of the land that the park is on.
- Activities for kids including a nature bingo game, and more.
- Mat-Su Trails and Parks Foundation will be offering short guided tours of the park.
- King of the Mountain Food Truck!
We will have Short/White (2.9km), Medium (4.3km) and Long (5.7km) courses available. Please plan to be finished by 4pm. The courses will be left up after the event as a training activity for the rest of the week through Sunday 8/22.
Driving directions: from the Parks Highway, drive 8 miles down Knik Goose Bay Road to Settlers Bay Road (there’s a Tesoro at the corner). Turn left and go down the hill. At the first intersection, turn left onto Settlers Bay Drive and follow the road around to the east and south to the end. The North parking area is on the right at the gate. Since several vendor tables will be there, park wherever you can, respecting private property.
