There will be a traditional meet with White (beginner) to Red (advanced) courses at Pia. This location provides access to Far North Bicentennial Park and the tank trails (JBER training lands) on the east side of Anchorage and is a great area for orienteering!
NOTE: We are a running a little behind getting things set up, starts are delayed until 6pm! Start any time between 6pm and 8pm. You must be done by 10pm.
From Muldoon Road turn onto Pioneer Drive, then Klutina Drive. Proceed to the gate at the end of the paving on Klutina drive, and then proceed on foot about 250 meters to the clearing beneath the power lines.
Because the courses travel across military land, you must get an Sportsman pass and sign a JBER waiver. (If you did not pre-register two weeks ago that’s okay, but you must have an iSportsman pass).
- Participants over age 16 should login to iSportsman, navigate to “sign in/out
of area”, select “Richardson” and then select Training areas 424 and 429 and
confirm. - JBER hold harmless waivers must be received digitally or on paper for all
participants.
It will be easier and less time consuming if you complete these steps before the meet, but its well worth it!
Director’s notes
Be aware that some areas mapped as open land in the utility corridors are quite overgrown with dense young trees and shrubs. This is bear-prone territory. Bring bear spray and make noise. I briefly saw one black bear who immediately ran away when I startled it while setting the course near the large bridge on the tank trail/road. Mosquitos are out! wearing appropriate cover or using insect repellent is recommended.
Think Fast, Think Fun, Think Orienteering!
