  1. Concur that Control #6 (code 28) is not at the intersection marked on the map after doing a quick spiral in the area. The rest of the course flowed smoothly and was good for a beginner to learn about navigating without a compass, collecting features, and that even if the map shows a “shortcut” trail, it can still be faster to stick with the longer, main trail ๐Ÿ˜› .

  2. Fun walk and trot on the short course. I, too, tried a lesser trail to #6 and ended up bushwhacking. Pink flagging is still there. It’s a nice time of year to be in this grassy-shrubby area. Thanks, Trond.

  3. 038 on the short course was MIA @ 1pm Saturday. We found the flags twisted up on the ground near the powerline. I put them back where they should be.

  4. Controls #6, 7 and 8 are also gone on the short courseLike I said above I found #5 and put it back. I donโ€™t have anything suitable to replace them, so they are unmarked as of 1:51 Saturday.

  5. Yep, on the short course, #6, 7 and 8 are missing as of 3:00 to 3:30 pm.

No bushwacking for us and we pretty knew we were on the map at the right place when we found that #6 was missing, although we did go most of the way to the gasline, just to be sure.

Really nice to get out for a hike. Thanks, Trond, for the work. Course is white/easy yellow. I didn’t catch that the clues and control numbers weren’t on the map until I started, so I was a blind on that count and I was glad the course wasn’t challenging.

  6. Dan and I did first half of long course on Saturday and, like the Evanses, really enjoyed exploring some new areas.. We did an especial lot of exploring since we both forgot our compasses.

  7. Mary and I also enjoyed exploring a new little corner of the park. Pretty sure we came across at least one bear den. Grateful that the green areas haven’t fully greened out yet, making bushwhacking much less arduous. Another week or two an we’d have made some different route choices. Thanks, Trond, for setting a wonderful course!

  8. I had so much fun playing with route gadget for the first time. Was very excited to upload the GPS file… and then very disappointed when my GPS seems to have gone astray at certain points. At times it said that I had gone completely off course. I mean not just that I went astray, but that I wandered into the residential neighborhood of Prospect Heights… Is this kind of GPS glitch normal?

  9. I just drew in my route in Route Gadget, but when I clicked Save it told me “Drawing is not finished yet.” ๐Ÿ™ I don’t know how to save my hard work to share it with others. If you right click it erases the last leg, but double clicking doesn’t seem to do anything either. How do you finish your drawing? There don’t seem to be any instructions for Route Gadget on the site. Maybe they’re buried somewhere in our directors’ notes. Too bad, since I haven’t tried to upload a route in years and thought it would be fun to add ours. If I knew how to start/stop a track on the GPS I have never really learned how to use, I’d rather upload my “real” path, but didn’t mind tracing it in manually until I couldn’t save. Had fun on the course anyway.

    • Dela, its sounds like you might have missed a control or the finish when drawing your course, that’s happened to me before. Whenever you successfully click on a control it highlights direct route to next control.

There’s a link for how to use RouteGadget (https://oalaska.org/participate/use-routegadget/) right under the button to go directly to RouteGadget, perhaps we can make that link more obvious.

      • Thanks, Mike. I didn’t know you were supposed to click on controls. That explains the annoying purple line that kept following me around! I clicked on the features we found the controls on and just drew in our route one click at a time. If I can find time, which is unlikely this week, I’ll try again, or just wait until next time.

  10. I printed out the long map and was a bit puzzled that there were no clues on the map. Oh well, I’ll just have to read the topography on the map! No problem! After much to-ing and fro-ing on the Upper Llama bike trail, I finally found #1, then sailed on through to #8 , where I was flummoxed (had to find #5 before #4, the huge rock I walked right by earlier). Surely #8 was in the depression above & behind the cliff! That’s what the map said! But time ran out; I was beyond my self imposed cut off time. So back to the start I went, somewhat dejected. And then I again checked this web page – Holy cow! There are the clues! #8 is not in the depression, but atop the hill! No wonder.
All in all good fun outing, seeing parts of the woods I’d never seen before. Great views of the gorge from the little trail along the south edge! Thanks, Trond, for a good course!
