The rain stopped and the sun came out for the 60+ people who showed up at UAA to enjoy orienteering skills courses on Wednesday, June 11th. There were 4 courses to try: 1) a standard White course, 2) a Corridor orienteering course, where most of the map is whited out, except for a 60-ish meter wide strip around the course you’re supposed to follow; 3) a no-map magnet course, where only the compass bearings are given on a blank sheet of paper; amd 4) a gas station memory-O where you have to navigate by memory between controls without carrying a map. In the ‘gas station’ version, three hub controls had maps to 3 ‘satellite’ controls each (plus the location of the next hub control with a map); you could remember all four, or return repeatedly to the hub to look at the map again. Isaac Bertschi, Heather, Logan, and Elia Williams topped the White course in 20 minutes; Ian Moore won the Memory-O in 17:29; Brian Kirchner won the Corridor in 9:25 and Jen Jolliff won the No-map Magnet in 7:03.
Many people helped make this meet possible. Toby Schwoerer suggested the gas station variant on the memory-O; Ian Moore and Cory Smith remembered the grid north needs a few degrees adjustment for the no-map magnet; Chris Tomsen jumped in to help before the start so we could both set up, and get the last few controls in place, and then helped at the registration table most of the evening; Dela Grey helped plan the evening and was there all the way through taking down the controls.
