Bird Valley-O is a go! Despite the deep snow, it is melting fast and we’ll be able to hold a full traditional meet with five courses, though it may be punchy in places. The birch trees are beginning to blush with green and the menziesia is just starting to leaf. The devils club is still asleep – quiet, don’t wake it before Saturday! It really is lovely in the valley now and so easy to explore compared to later in the year.
- White, 1.5K, 6 controls, all are near or on trails
- Yellow, 2.1K, 10 controls, some off-trail orienteering, compass use is
recommended - Orange, 3.2K, 13 controls, most controls are off-trail
- Green, 5.4K, 14 controls
- Red, 8.3K, 22 controls
Green and Red courses will require orienteers to ford Penguin Creek near both the beginning and end of the course. Long pants and leather gloves are recommended for all courses. Carry a bear spray, though I have not seen bear traces while setting the course.
You might want to read the Bird Valley Orienteering Companion before you come to the meet on Saturday.
Start Location: At the end of Konikson Road at the Bird Valley trailhead.
Start Time: 1-3 p.m. Red and Green please try to start between 1 & 2 p.m. Meet for social time at 5 p.m. at the Brown Bear Saloon (in Indian along the Seward Highway).
